Understanding And Overcoming Low Self Esteem

Self-esteem is the determining factor for your success in any endeavor in life. What you end up doing in life and how you perform all depend on your self-esteem. Self-esteem refers to what you think of yourself. If you have high self-esteem, that means you are sure of your abilities to complete any task successfully. A high self-esteem ensures your success to a great extent. On the other hand, there are some people who do not trust themselves. Such people are symptomatic of low self- esteem.

The signs of low self-esteem are difficult to notice in yourself. However, other people around you can quickly notice these signs. So, to be able to check yourself before you fall prey to self-esteem, let us give you some of the conditions that lead to low self-esteem.

You reach that stage where you think nothing of yourself. You stay quiet for the fear of being termed inadequate. You yourself feel that you are worth nothing and will not be able to complete any work given to you. Although there are times when you feel your life is capable of doing anything it attempts, yet you lose confidence in your abilities very quickly.

Low self-esteem deters you achieving anything in your life as it always holds you back. If you have low self-esteem, something you would otherwise do very easily would also become an arduous task. Thus, you will not be able to accomplish anything phenomenal. It is very important to root out this low self- esteem from your life so that you can really progress in life.

Low self-esteem is not something a person is born with. It is in fact the repercussion of the hardships one has faced in life. There are times when certain events take place in your life and they result in your losing confidence in yourself. Usually these events are such that they invoke some trauma and stay with you for life. So everytime you remember them, you lose your self-esteem a little and eventually end up with low self-esteem.

If at a time in your life you have been humiliated in front of many people or even an important decision gone wrong, which has caused you to forfeit something important or dear to you, you are likely to bear the effects of it all your life in the form of low self-esteem. When one is born, they neither have high self-esteem, nor a low one. It is the experiences one undergoes in life that determine this fact.

One big mistake people make is when they equate loss of self-esteem to something that is irreparable. However, it is not impossible to regain your self-esteem. You can transform the root cause of this low self-esteem into an impetus for your growth by changing that negative experience into a nice one.

You must change these bad memories into productive ones so that whenever you remember them or experience something similar, you are not left harassed by your negative feelings and the feeling of low self-confidence.

It is essential for your well-being, to protect your self-confidence. Even your children must be taught the ability to save their self-esteem. The confidence to face each and every day head-on must be inculcated in them. Otherwise, their low self-esteem will undermine them as a person and will forever hamper their growth.

You will never be able to display your fullest potential if you have low self-esteem. It is possible to overcome this feeling of low self-esteem and you should make an attempt towards it as quickly as possible. Otherwise, you will only be left wondering all your life, what all you could have done.

Lucid Dreams

Finally we have arrived to dreams which are more on the lighter side – Lucid Dreams. What is a Lucid Dream? A Lucid Dream is having a dream where the dreamer is totally conscious of what is going on. Basically this means being awake while you are dreaming. In these types of dreams, anything is possible and unlike the previous types of dreams, lucid dreams do not fall in so much to tragic experiences because the dreamer can create their own dreams just from imagining their ideal scene.

Lucid dreams come in three forms:

  • Dream-initiated lucid dream
  • Wake-initiated lucid dream
  • Mnemonic-initiated lucid dream

A dream-initiated lucid dream happens during the state when the dreamer is having a dream and then realizes that they are dreaming. It is kind of like dreaming and then waking up but you’re still in a dream, not having “really” woken up yet.

A wake-initiated lucid dream is when one goes from being awake to falling asleep, but when they fall asleep, they are still awake, and the dream begins as they are awake. So it is basically a transition between being conscious while being awake and then being conscious while dreaming.

A mnemonic-initiated lucid dream is one is confident that they will have a lucid dream in the upcoming dream. This could mean that they fall asleep and know they somewhere in the dream, they will come back alive conscious again. It is not randomly processed, but is done through repetition, someone like when a hypnotist can tell the mind when something is going to happen.

Below are some dreams of people who describe their lucid dreams. These lucid dreams are from a book called Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge, Ph.D. & Howard Rheingold.

Case Examples of Lucid Dreams

1. I realized I was dreaming. I raised my arms and began to rise (actually I was being lifted). I rose through the black sky that blended into indigo, to deep purple, to lavender, to white, then to very bright light. All the time I was lifted there was the most beautiful music I have ever heard. It seemed like voices rather than instruments. There are no words to describe the joyI felt. I was very gently lowered back to earth. I had the feeling that I had come to a turning point in my life and I had chosen the right path. The dream, the joy I experienced, was kind of a reward, or so I felt. It was a long, slow slide back to wakefulness with music echoing in my ears. The euphoria lasted several days; the memory forever. (A.F., Bay City, Michigan).

2. I was standing in a field in an open area when my wife pointed in the direction of the sunset. I looked at it and thought, “How odd; I’ve never seen colors like that before.” Then it dawned on me: “I must be dreaming!” Never had I experienced such clarity and perception – the colors were so beautiful and the sense of freedom so exhilarating that I started racing through this beautiful golden wheat field waving my hands in the air and yelling at the top of my voice, “I’m dreaming! I’m dreaming!” Suddenly, I started to lose the dream; it must have been the excitement. I instantly woke up. As it dawned on me what had just happened, I woke up my wife and said, “I did it! I did it!” I was conscious within the dream state and I’ll never be the same. Funny, isn’t it? How a taste of it can affect one like that. It’s the freedom, I guess; we see that we are truly in control of our own universe. (D.W., Elk River, Minnesota).

3. One night I was dreaming of standing on a gentle hill, looking out over the tops of maples, alders, and other trees. The leaves of the maples were bright red and rustling in the wind. The grass at my feet was lush and vividly green. All the colors about me were more saturated than I have ever seen.

Perhaps the awareness that the colors were “brighter than they should be” shocked me into realizing that I was in a dream, and that what lay about me was not “real.” I remember saying to myself, “If this was a dream, “I should be able to fly in the air.” I tested my hunch and was enormously pleased that I could effortlessly, and fly anywhere I wanted. I skimmed over the tops of the trees and sailed many miles over new territory. I flew upward, far above the landscape, and hovered in the air currents like an eagle.

When I awoke I felt as if the experience of flying had energized me. I felt a sense of well-being that seemed directly related to the experience of being in a lucid dream, of taking control of the flying. (J.B., Everett, Washington).

As you can see from the above, Lucid dreams can offer the dreamer more fun than he or she usually has when entering a normal dream state. How many dreams have you had when you woke up and gone through the day totally unaware of what dreams you have had? To me, and to many others, it would be interesting to see what types of dreams we have in the moment of dreaming and remembering with vivid clarity, what we’ve dreamt the night before.

In the last past week, we have gone over many dreams in which were totally absurd to totally mind blowing. All this stuff is possible through lucid dreams, such as having telekinesis like moving objects with your mind or supernatural abilities such as flying at the speed of light across the earth. In the next post, I will explain how one can have a lucid dream and conclude this series with how we can enlarge consciousness through our dreams.

The Dreamer and The Dream

The day dawns and in the early morning there is a strong sense of peacefulness that permeates across the expanses. The sky is new and clean, the colors are crisp and fine in detail. We look towards a slight hill and see where open grassy fields meet a wooded area. Mist sits heavy in spots that are the lowest amongst the tree trunks. There is every so slight a breeze that plays with the mist, making it appear as though the mist has fingers that move to some unheard song. The wooded land is made from many trees standing tall together. There are bushes and plants that live amongst the tree roots, giving the floor of the woods a touch of life that is reflective of the splendor of life that is the canopy above. This wooded place holds an appeal that draws us towards it. So peaceful it looks from the outside. Songs grow louder in our approach as the many birds that celebrate the new day chirp out their pleasures. These trees are filled with life and there are so many possibilities therein. One can only move to enter these woods and see what it holds within its borders.

The air is cooler in the woods; Cooler but not unpleasant. There are trees of many varieties growing together. The dew drips from leaf and needle in irregular rhythms adding to the sounds of the forest. Life is teaming in every way within these trees. We make our way with little effort to the center of this place. There is a tree that stands taller then the others. It has a thick trunk and branches heavily laden with so many leafs. Hands on hips, neck arched back as far as it goes, we look up and up to try to take in the wonder of this beautiful tree. Standing there, breathing in the fresh air, surrounded by the music of life that is this forest, stretching our arms out as big as we can, we close our eyes and take a big breath of air. We are struck with the thought that all is perfect here beneath this great tree in the center of these woods. We call out to no one in particular ‘this is perfect’. And land on our backside in surprise when we are answered ‘what is perfect?’.

From its great height, the tree that stands so much taller then the rest bends forward, revealing a giant face in the wood. A face who’s great eyes are focused on us as it moves close to see who is at its trunk. What does one do when a tree suddenly comes alive and begins to speak? In a slow speaking voice, it repeats its question, “What is perfect?” What does one do? ...One answers the question. We say what we have observed. We tell the tree, “This place is perfect. The air is fresh and clean. There is life in everything. The trees here are full of beauty and live harmoniously together. There is only the sense of peace in these woods.”

The tree replies in its deep, rich voice, “Ahhh. I see. You see peace and harmony do you?” Extending a branch that is wide and sturdy he says, “Come, perch upon my limb so that I may show you a thing or two.” When a great tree asks for you to sit on one of its branches, it is a good bet that the best thing to do in a situation such as that, is to adhere to its request and sit on its branch. High up into the tree tops we are lifted. From here we can see the expanse of this forest. The great tree speaks to us again and says, “What am I? Am I a tree or am I a forest? All around me I see trees. Every tree is my idea and my creation. I have many ideas and therefore many trees are present. In each tree, there is my dream. Look to the west...” He adjusts us so that we may better see towards the west. “... There, you see that tree with no leaves. The one that the sun has bleached white and that has fallen against the tree beside it, which in turn, has been pushed into the tree beside it. That is a dream the coldness of life has killed. Not only is it dead, it effects and weighs down the dreams around it.” We are moved towards the north. The great tree says, “There, in the north, you see several trees that are smaller then the rest. Their needles and leaves are sparse. They can not grow into fullness. The soil there is not rich enough to give the opportunity for them to grow into fullness. Those are my dreams as well.” We are then shown the trees to the south. The great tree continues, “There is a hollow over there. In it the trees compete to get the most sun so that they may grow fuller then the rest. See how their branches crossover each other so that they may prevail. Those trees use much of their resources to prevail and in doing so, they hold each other back. Those are dreams that are in conflict with one another. Those are parts of me. I see this happen yet I feel unable to stop it from continuing.” The branch we sit upon is moved towards the great face of the tree. It says, “What say you now? Is it harmony you still see?”

Glancing around us at the forest, now light by the mid morning sun, we see the trees with new eyes. Looking back to the face of the great tree we say, “You asked the question whether you are a tree or a forest. It is confusing to us what the answer may be. The trees around you are your dreams. You showed us a broken dream, dreams that are not possible, and dreams that interfere with each other. We can only see these woods as something very much different from what we saw before you revealed to us its nature. Still, is there not a harmony found here? There are many trees that are strong and have reached fullness is there not? Isn’t there still a balance of good and bad?”

The great tree responds after making a long sighing sound. “There is truth in what you say, to be sure. But I can not find myself anymore among my dreams. I have so many and no longer can see the tree from the forest. Dreams have a way of interacting with themselves that leave me feeling as though I am without the choice of what dream I desire most of all. I want to feel important and strong and that I matter. My dreams are so many that I have forgotten where they begun and I left off. I am a forest I think and a tree no longer. How can I be important and strong and matter now I ask.”

Looking at the saddened face of the great tree we experience its pain. “Great tree...” We say, “You are important. You are strong. And most important of all, you do matter. You are the dreamer and your dreams are what you make them to be. You are a tree and this forest is you. Dreams may come and go and are always subject to the world around you but you are the source of this creation. There is life abundant in you and beauty surrounds you. It may be that you have only forgotten to look at it in this way. You did not show us the east. We can see form here that in the east, your dreams are strong and are full in their splendor. If you were to stand alone, you would still be magnificent. Your dreams, all of them in every direction, add to your magnificence. It is easy to see a forest and not a tree but that does not reduce the meaning of you, the dreamer. You are every potential that can be and have opened the way to greatness by allowing your dreams to be as they may be. Some dreams work out, some don’t but every dream is a part of you. And it is plain to see that new dreams are always being seeded here. Yes great tree, we still see perfection here. You are perfect in being.”

The great tree closed it eyes and stood taller, remaining quiet for a few moments. Making a sound like the wind moving through its leaves, it appeared the tree was pleased with our words. Slow beads of sap began to weep from the corners of its eyes. The branch that was our perch is lowered to the ground and we step off. The great tree bends so that it may face us and says, “Thank you my friends. You have reminded me who I am again. I have always been that which I have wanted to be the most. I allowed myself to be distracted by my dreams, losing myself by holding on to the very ideas I created. My forest is made from all manners of my thoughts, but are not greater then I. I see now I must allow them to be but give them the freedom to be without rooting them too deeply in my own expression of being. I will always be the dreamer and my dreams are the foliage that decorate my existence. I am glad you entered my dreams today. You have helped me greatly.”

Feeling a warm rush of pleasure from the great tree’s words, we reach out and touch the great trunk of this wonderful tree. “It is our greatest joy to have entered your world and to have seen your splendor. All are subject to these same troubles in life. We all lose ourselves in our dreams great one and all need a friend from time to time to help us see who we are. You have helped us just as much and for that we are grateful. Thank you for sharing with us your dreams this day. You are what matters and your dreams reflect that. And this forest is a beautiful world of dreams.”

The sun tells us it is past noon. The day has warmed considerably. We leave this great place for home and we take with us the sense that everyone is the dreamer. The dreamer creates the dreams and the dreams exemplify the dreamer. We mustn’t allow ourselves to over identify with our dreams less we loose our sense of who we are. Life is a splendid in its many acts and those acts dreamt should be shaped by us and not us by them. The dreamer is like the wind in the trees and the dreams need only to shake and rustle like leaves to come into fullness. And there is nothing more important then knowing that.

Why Are We Overweight?

Why are we overweight? This question has been asked many times and we all have different answers. The most common is because we eat too much, especially junk food, and exercise less. It is easy to say, I will lose weight and keep it off. Reality is that when we eat more calories than we can use for energy, our bodies store fat. The issue is whether we are seriously committed to change our lifestyle, adopt healthier habits and exercise more. After we gain weight, we find difficulty losing it. There is hope. Increasing our fat burning metabolism will help us lose weight.

Most people have tried many diets, such as quick weight loss diets with the hope of losing that unwanted fat, yet failed to keep the weight off. Why? Because quick diets are not the answer. Think for a moment, we did not gain all that weight in one week, but gradually, right? Therefore, we can lose that unwanted fat gradually and keep the weight off. This is why it is so hard to lose fat and to stay slim with those quick weight loss diets. Some of these diets are so extreme that leave you feeling hungry, weak, and the end is that instead of promoting a healthy eating habit to lose weight, you end up cheating and eating until you satisfy those cravings.

Back to our original question, why are we overweight? People are overweight for different reasons: eating too much, lack of exercise, slow fat burning metabolism, retaining water, eating too late, eating unconsciously while watching TV, eating the wrong foods. We tend to eat for emotional reasons too, as we relate food as calming our nerves. Sound familiar? Sure, we feel fine while eating, but is this the answer to calm our nerves? No. Definitely not. Anxiety can drive us to eat more and see food as an ideal comfort.

How to resolve the overweight issue?

First, we recommend you take a conscious decision of examining your eating habits and consult a physician to check your health before starting any nutritional program and exercise plan.

Second, keep a daily record of what you eat, drink at least 8 glasses of water, have green tea to increase your metabolism, consume lots of vegetables and fresh fruit, avoid junk food and heavy sugary products.

Third, learn to say no when friends or family members offer you second or third servings.

Fourth, keep a firm decision and a positive attitude to lose that unwanted weight, visualize the new you.

Fifth, contact friends who will encourage you to lose weight and motivate you when feeling down. There is always someone ready to keep you motivated.

Whenever you feel eating for anxiety, think twice. Stop for a moment and ask yourself, “am I really hungry or is just an emotional excuse?” Instead of eating impulsively, try to drink water or have a cup of green tea, go out for a walk, or contact one of your friends for motivation.

Remember you are not alone; there are many people trying to lose weight and helping each other is the most valuable tool. Others have lost weight and kept the weight off. I did it, so can you! Believe in yourself, you are special.

Three New Discoveries

090909124129-large

Bosavi giant woolly rat.

A Smithsonian Institution biologist, working with the Natural History Unit of the BBC, has discovered a new species of giant rat on a filmmaking expedition to a remote rainforest in New Guinea. The discovery was made in the crater of an extinct volcano named Mount Bosavi in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province. This gigantic volcano’s crater is two and half miles wide and rimmed with walls nearly half a mile high, trapping the creatures inside a “lost world” of mountain rainforests probably rarely visited by humans.

Weighing nearly 3.5 pounds, and measuring 32 inches from nose to tail, the Bosavi woolly rat is one of the biggest rats in the world. Most surprising was that the rat was completely tame, a sign that animals in the isolated crater were unfamiliar with humans. “It is a true rat, closely related to the rats and mice most of us are familiar with, but so much bigger,” said Helgen.

The gigantic rat is silvery gray, with thick woolly fur. It has a vegetarian diet of leaves and roots, and probably builds underground nests beneath rocks and tree roots. A member of the genus Mallomys, it has yet to receive its formal scientific name.

terrabon

Inside this white building, piles of sorghum are broken down into acids. The acids they produce can be used to make gasoline.

A company that has developed a process for converting organic waste and other biomass into gasoline–Terrabon, based in Houston–recently announced a partnership with Waste Management, the giant garbage-collection and -disposal company based in Houston. The partnership could help Terrabon bring its technology to market.

Amid a profusion of new biofuels technologies, this one stands out because it will be relatively easy to scale up for producing millions of gallons of fuel, says James McMillan, the biochemical process R&D group manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, who is not connected to the company.

Most biofuels companies fall into one of two categories. Some use enzymes to break down biomass into simple sugars and a single organism to convert sugars into fuel, such as yeast. Others use high temperatures and pressure to break biomass down into basic chemical building blocks–carbon monoxide and hydrogen–which are then chemically processed into fuels. Terrabon has developed a process that combines the two. It uses a naturally occurring mixture of organisms to convert biomass, not into fuels, but into carboxylic acids. These can be converted into fuel and other chemicals using well-known chemical processes. Gary Luce, the company’s CEO, says Terrabon’s fuels can compete with petroleum-based fuels if prices are above $75 a barrel. (The price of oil is currently about $70 a barrel.)

The approach has an advantage over single-organism-based methods because the mixture of organisms used, collected from salt marshes, are adapted to survive in the wild. They don’t require the special sterile environments needed to prevent single-organism cultures from being contaminated, which brings down the cost of equipment.

These organisms naturally break down biomass into carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid, the key component of vinegar. These acids can serve as chemical precursors for a wide variety of chemicals and fuels, including gasoline and diesel, via processing steps that convert the acids into ketones and alcohols. The acids can be made without the expensive equipment required for high-pressure and -temperature processes. They can also then be processed into fuels using equipment at existing refineries, helping keep costs down.

0 hair-based solar panel 761

The New Hairy Solar Panel

A new type of solar panel using human hair could provide the world with cheap, green electricity, believes its teenage inventor. Milan Karki, 18, who comes from a village in rural Nepal, believes he has found the solution to the developing world’s energy needs. The young inventor says hair is easy to use as a conductor in solar panels and could revolutionise renewable energy.

The hair replaces silicon, a pricey component typically used in solar panels, and means the panels can be produced at a low cost for those with no access to power, he explained. Milan and four classmates initially made the solar panel as an experiment but the teens are convinced it has wide applicability and commercial viability.

The solar panel, which produces 9 V (18 W) of energy, costs around £23 to make from raw materials. But if they were mass-produced, Milan says they could be sold for less than half that price, which could make them a quarter of the price of those already on the market.

Melanin, a pigment that gives hair its colour, is light sensitive and also acts as a type of conductor. Because hair is far cheaper than silicon the appliance is less costly. The solar panel can charge a mobile phone or a pack of batteries capable of providing light all evening. Milan began his quest to create electricity when he was a boy living in Khotang, a remote district of Nepal completely unconnected to electricity. According to him, villagers were skeptical of his invention at first.

The Significance of the Number 23

The number 23 has always been a special number in numerology, but it was really only known to a few conspiracy theorists until the Jim Carrey movie about the subject came out last year. The movie discussed the Discordian fascination with the idea that everything that happens on earth and in all of existence is somehow related to the number 23. However, some skeptics would say that this idea has been stretched a little far by some numerology enthusiasts.

Discordia is a rather rare religion that is based on the study of random events and numbers. The number 23 is sacred in religion because it belongs to a Greek Goddess named Eris. She is the Goddess of Chaos and her followers practice a form of ritual worship called chaos magick.

The number 23 has been studied by many great metaphysicists, including Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson who wrote three books about the number. The number is seen by these authors as being the key to illumination and they also claim that major shifts in collective consciousness and world events can be seen in each cycle of 23 years.

The number 23 is one of the most commonly prime numbers. A prime number is one that can only be divided by it and one. Twenty-three is the lowest prime that consists of consecutive digits that are also primes. Prime numbers have been described as being the building blocks of the world of numbers and therefore also the building blocks of the reality that we experience.

Twenty three is also a significant number in love. This is because in ancient China, the number two was assigned a feminine role and the number three was given a masculine role. The number 23 then became to symbolize marriage, procreation, and progeny. The number was honored and revered by Chinese mathematicians who recognized that it was made up of two consecutive prime numbers while being a prime number in itself.

The great psychologist and anthropologist Carl Jung also thought that the number 23 was special and defined it as a number of synchronicity. It is a significant number in history as well. Everything from the date that Tokyo's most damaging earthquake to the falling of the Twin Towers on September 11th adds up to the number 23 in terms of numerology.

These are the darker sides of this number 23. In the Kaballah, the Hebrew studies of gematria, the number means severity or judgment. It is associated with apocalypse. In fact, the date to beware of in the future would be the year 2023, according to that system of predictive numerology.

The number 23 is also quite special in science. It seems to turn up quite a bit in nature and it adds up to five, which is also quite common in nature. There are many superstitions and legends that make reference to this number somehow. One good example is that human ova and sperm each contain 23 chromosomes. These two sets of chromosomes must pair up before a new human being can be created in the womb. For this reason, it is also seen as a number of regeneration and eternity.

Where Do Skillful Artists Obtain Their Stimulation? - They Connect With Their Subconscious!...

Artists far and wide are genuinely inspiring to us on the whole. One man's meat is another man's poison, or so the proverb goes!

This clearly has to be what makes living so motivating. The subjects elected by them to render can, in fact, be deadly, crystal clear, serious, for the most part hazy, unbelievable, pure desire, you moniker it, they generate it and sometimes even tongue in cheek works of art.

To cut a long story short, you might question what they link to? Lots of things for certain. Are these folks of this planet? The very same world which we reside in? You might be forgiven for thinking this! It is like they are in fact on a higher plane, we realise as we set our eyes upon their hard work.

But if the work is or with a title, the title can be really deep as well as difficult for us to figure out. We stand back and explore the painting from all ways, musing about just how a specific artist could possibly accomplish this result, from the given title. In some instances this would be a form of abstraction also it would seem one of the variety of CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACT PAINTINGS.

This more often or not has almost certainly originated as of the artist's intuitive psyche. This very important part of the brain that appears to work too much at times. Whether it is when we are in fact resting, or else only when we are in a drowsy and surreal state, drifting in and out of sleep. More often than not, all through the night time hours is when we are in fact at our finest, for making important decisions.

Therefore painters are up and out of bed, getting to grips along with their canvas, on their personal foresight whilst it is in spite of everything fresh inside their heads. This is equivalent to authors in truth scribbling down snippets for their next book .

These visionary forms of imagery normally turn out to be ABSTRACT PAINTINGS. It may be brought on if you like, by a certain spiritual perception otherwise that nature of moving know-how in some shape or form. Although I use the word spiritual in this situation, it does not necessarily have to signify holy, it could well be anything derived as of nature itself. With these two subjects alone you have an abundance of choice matter..

Not everyone around us is religious, but generally people get pleasure from nature and the natural world. Therefore we do have a profusion of subject matter for our CANVAS ART.

One other factor which I have omitted up to now here, is the worth of music and how this may play a really large part in our artworks. Music, to me individually, continually kind of hints at colours to you and it can unquestionably reflect your changing moods whilst you paint. Music too, transports you to another world, whether you are keen on heavy rock or else classical music. There is always something in the music world for us all to feel motivated.

About the Author: Anna Meenaghan runs an interactive internet art website where artists and art lovers equally have a convention point. There you are able to locate almost everything concerning art from canvas art through to abstract paintings as well as a immense amount of "Help" guides for growing potential artists.

How to communicate assertively

The dictionary defines assertive as bold, confident or self-assured. Assertiveness can be defined as: 'The ability to communicate our thoughts, feelings and ideas, both positive and negative, in an open and honest way which does not abuse our rights or the rights of others.

A lot of people are struggling on this area because it takes guts, tactfulness and a healthy self-image to be so. Being assertive does not imply being forceful, offensive or self-seeking. An assertive person should demonstrate the ability to stand up for his thoughts and feelings without being mean or being too apprehensive. It is midway between passiveness and aggressiveness.
Assertiveness allows a person to feel free to express his feelings, thoughts, and desires. An assertive individual tends to know his rights and does not allow aggressive people to hurt him or otherwise unduly manipulate him. Being assertive is linked to higher self-esteem and is considered an important communication skill. One way of being assertive is to communicate directly and honestly your feelings and needs. There are several ways of doing this:
  • Make an honest statement about how you are feeling. A great way to make this type of statement is to begin with "I feel.. or I think..." An example of this is in the statement, "I feel sad when we argue." This helps keep the focus on communication versus blaming. ex: "I feel angry when you..." versus "You make me angry!!". Be sure not to disguise your "I" statement with a 'you' statement. For example, "I feel you are selfish," is really a 'you' statement disguised as an "I" statement.
  • Explain what action or behavior has triggered your feelings. Be specific about why you feel the way you do. Keep the explanation in the present, not in the past. For example, "...because you did not want to go with me to counseling," rather than "you never want to go to counseling with me." See the difference.
  • Tell the person what you want or need now or in the future when similar situation happen. Be direct. Less is more. ex: " I would like to take next week off for vacation" vs. " I was thinking about taking a vacation". Be sure to make your needs or wants reasonable and phrase them as needs, not demands. For example, "in the future I need to be informed when you plan on staying out late with the guys." Refrain from using "you better..." or "next time you will..." These come off as demands which you will want to avoid.
  • If the other person still has not given you what you want or need, explain what you intend to do about it in the future. Use "I will" statements such as, "I will not make plans with you in the future if you cancel again at the last minute." It is important not to make these statement as threats because if you do, and then don't follow through, the other person will get the message that you are not serious.
  • Be tactful and respectful. Ex: "Do you have a moment to talk" or "I am sorry to interrupt".
  • Know how to say no. If you do not want to do something or are unable to, it is ok to say no. Again be direct and specific. You do not have to explain in detail. ex. "I am sorry, I cannot do that at this time"
  • Maintain proper body language. Walk and sit with back straight. Hold head up. Look at people as they pass or talk. Dress and groom confidently. Choose clothing, hair, make up, etc, that show you care about yourself.
  • Listen to what the other person is saying. Make sure they are finished and respond. You do not have to agree, but restate what you think they said to you. ex. "I understand your concern about ___, however I disagree" or "I understand what you are saying and agree with your fact on____, however----"
